Sheriff's office admits ICE did communicate on criminal background of Mexican gang member

AUSTIN – The Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) released confirmation this afternoon that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did provide to TCSO the criminal history of Julio Cesar Mendoza-Caballero, a “Sureños 13” gang member who Sheriff Sally Hernandez released from jail despite a detainer request issued by ICE.

'Sanctuary Sally' recklessly releases Mexican gang member


AUSTIN – The Austin American-Statesman reported late yesterday that Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez released from Travis County jail a known Mexican gang member who had been deported four times already and has been convicted of stealing a firearm in Hopkins County in 2008. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Travis County denied their June 16 detainer request and did not notify ICE before the release of Julio Cesar Mendoza-Caballero, a member of the “Sureños 13” gang.

Mendoza-Caballero was arrested for “assault causing bodily injury,” a charge which Sheriff Hernandez believes does not merit honoring an ICE detainer.

Travis GOP elects new chairman; Mackowiak calls for unity

AUSTIN -- The Travis County Republican Party Executive Committee elected a new county chairman Tuesday night.

Matt Mackowiak, a political consultant and executive vice chairman of the Travis GOP, receive 46 votes of the precinct chairmen voting on Tuesday's meeting. Don Zimmerman, former Austin City Councilman, radio show host, and Travis County GOP Steering Committee member, received 38 votes. The meeting was held at the Austin Public Library Cepeda Branch in East Austin.
The county chairman vacancy occurred when James Dickey won his bid to become chairman of the Republican Party of Texas on June 3. The position of executive vice chairman will remain vacant at least until the next scheduled meeting of the Travis GOP Executive Committee on Sept. 12.
